What is Cashmere?

Cashmere isn't just a fiber: it's a caress, a whisper of luxury woven by nature. Born in the cold, highlands where cashmere goats roam, this textile treasure is admired around the world for its enveloping softness and unique ability to provide warmth without weight.

But not all cashmeres are created equal. Behind a sweater or scarf, there is a story of patience, care, and respect for the material. Only the purest wool, delicately harvested, can be transformed into a garment that warms not only the body but also the senses.

Extraordinarily rare, this wool comes from cashmere goats and is prized for its delicacy, durability, and unique thermoregulatory properties. How do you recognize true cashmere? Where does this special wool come from, and what are the steps that transform a raw fiber into a timeless garment, like AGAIN Cashmere?

We'll take you on a journey through the world of cashmere: its origins, its production secrets, and how to recognize the true excellence behind this legendary material.

Inner Mongolia

How is real cashmere born?

AGAIN Cashmere's journey begins in a remote corner of the world, where nature dictates its own rhythm...

In the pastures of Inner Mongolia, at an altitude of over 4,000 meters, Capra hircus goats live in semi-freedom, in their natural habitat, in harmony with the environment and under the care of communities that perpetuate a centuries-old tradition.

In this majestic landscape, where winters reach -40°C, this small but resilient animal survives. To cope with the biting cold, these goats develop a second skin: an inner layer of incredibly fine and soft fibers that act as a natural insulator. This undercoat, hidden beneath a coarser coat, is what we know as cashmere.

Every spring, when the snow begins to melt and nature awakens, the goats shed naturally. At that moment, the shepherds and artisans—guardians of ancestral knowledge—using gestures inherited from generations, gently collect the fibers with combs. No shearing or plucking is done: the animal is accompanied through its natural shedding cycle, respecting its well-being and the balance of the ecosystem.

The quality of cashmere is recognized by the touch: long, fine, smooth fibers... ideal for creating a yarn as strong and soft as a cloud. Once collected, the wool is combed, spun, dyed, and transformed into fabric through an artisanal process that honors patience and attention to detail.

This is how an AGAIN Cashmere garment is born: not just from a noble fiber, but from a history woven with respect, time, and tradition.

In the midst of this vastness, we encountered the cashmere goats. Small creatures whose soft, velvety fur seemed to carry the essence of that mystical place. Cashmere, a fiber that combines lightness, warmth, and sustainability. It embodied the natural perfection we were seeking... It seemed as if the stars had aligned to show us a magical path that began at that moment.

To deserve its prestigious category, this wool must meet very specific conditions: each fiber must have a diameter less than 19.5 microns—thinner than a human hair—and contain a percentage of down at least 30% higher than the outer pile.

The difference with traditional wool is abysmal. While a sheep can provide up to 3 kilos of wool per year, a single cashmere goat produces, on average, barely 200 grams. This extreme scarcity, combined with its unique qualities of softness, lightness, and warmth, makes cashmere a deeply coveted material, a symbol of purity, elegance, and care for authenticity.

It's not just wool. It's a silent luxury born from the essential.

Cashmere: An exceptional yarn

There are fibers that warm. And there are others that tell stories. Cashmere is one of the finest and rarest materials in the fashion world, a symbol of timeless elegance and a quiet luxury born from the essential.

Rarity as origin

This precious yarn comes from free-roaming goats, guided by nomadic shepherds through the extreme landscapes of Mongolia, China, and Iran. At AGAIN Cashmere, we carefully select herds from Inner Mongolia, where the harsh climate and breeding traditions guarantee a coat of unparalleled quality. Only a small portion of the undercoat is carefully harvested once a year. This fiber—measuring just 15.5 to 16 microns, more than three times thinner than a human hair—is then hand-selected in an almost ritualistic gesture to preserve only the purest.

Each goat generously and leisurely offers just 200 grams of this wool per year. And when we discover that it takes between 600 and 800 grams to create a single cashmere sweater, we understand that it is not just a garment, but a work of textile art. Because true luxury lies not in quantity, but in the care, time, and soul behind each fiber.

A noble fiber that requires expert hands

Fine, pure, and delicate, cashmere fiber is as demanding as it is extraordinary. Although it possesses surprising resilience, its processing requires almost artistic precision. From harvesting to final weaving, each stage demands expertise, patience, and a profound respect for the material.

At AGAIN Cashmere, we work with the whitest and purest fibers, chosen not only for their quality but for their ability to reveal the invisible: a rich, vibrant color palette of subtle nuances and unique depth. This initial whiteness acts as a perfect canvas for the dyes, allowing each shade to elegantly come to life.

The density and regularity of the resulting yarn allow for a compact and uniform weave, guaranteeing garments that are not only seductive for their softness, but also for their durability and impeccable shape. Not all cashmere is the same: its quality varies depending on the fineness of the fiber, its origin, and, above all, the techniques applied at each stage of its manufacture.

Transforming cashmere is, in fact, an art. And like all true art, it is born from the fusion of nature, technique, and passion.

Why choose a cashmere garment?

Because it's not just about dressing, it's about feeling. Cashmere envelops you with its delicate warmth and incomparable softness. From a cozy blanket to warm gloves, from an elegant coat to a light scarf... cashmere embraces the body from head to toe, like a second skin that cares and comforts.

Each garment is designed to last and create memories. More than just an aesthetic choice, wearing cashmere is a conscious decision: opting for a durable, warm, and timeless material that accompanies every stage of life with style and sensitivity.

And if you're still looking for reasons to let yourself be wrapped in it, here are some more to discover why cashmere is the perfect ally for your everyday life.

  • Unparalleled softness: Ideal for the most sensitive skin.
  • Natural warmth: Perfect for protecting from the cold without adding excessive volume.
  • Durability: An investment that will accompany you in your daily life.
  • Versatility: Clothing and accessories for all occasions.
  • Sustainability: Natural and environmentally friendly materials when chosen consciously.
  • Timeless elegance: An understated luxury that never goes out of style.

At AGAIN Cashmere, our fibers are among the finest available on the market, ensuring exceptional softness to the touch. But the true magic of cashmere isn't just its delicacy: despite their fineness, these fibers are extremely durable.

Cashmere is an incredibly fine fiber, even more delicate than human hair, yet surprisingly strong. With proper care, a cashmere garment can last a long time, maintaining its beauty and softness.

The secrets of cashmere: from the heart of the goat to the garment that caresses your skin

Creating a cashmere sweater is a true act of magic and patience. Each goat, at its natural pace, produces only 200 grams of this precious fiber each year. Therefore, it takes between two and six goats to produce enough softness and warmth for a single garment.

This fact reveals the true rarity of cashmere: it represents barely half a percent of all the wool produced in the world, a treasure that nature bestows with limited generosity. As with any living culture, the quality and quantity of this fiber vary with the seasons, making each year unique and special.

And are you still wondering why we call cashmere an exceptional fabric? Because it's not just a fabric; it's a whisper of nature that becomes the purest embrace for your skin.

Cashmere: a natural palette of just three colors

Although it may seem incredible, cashmere naturally occurs in only three shades: gray, brown, and white. At AGAIN Cashmere, we choose to work primarily with the white fiber, the finest and softest of all, renowned for its exceptional quality and delicacy. From this pure base, we apply carefully selected dyes, respectful of both the health and integrity of the fibers. Thanks to this process, we can offer you a vibrant and wide palette, with more than one hundred unique colors created since AGAIN Cashmere's inception. Thus, each garment invites you to wrap your skin in the luxury and softness of cashmere, in the color that inspires you most.

The quality of a cashmere garment or accessory depends not only on the quality and care of the fiber, but also on the thread count, its thickness, and the weaving technique used.

Thread count: key to density and comfort

Thread count defines the density of the fabric and, therefore, the feel of the garment. A 4-thread cashmere sweater is thicker, more enveloping, and provides exceptional warmth and softness. At AGAIN Cashmere, we combine 2-thread, 4-thread (or more) cashmere wool with a tight knitting technique that guarantees garments with an incomparable feel, cozy warmth, and outstanding durability.

But the magic of cashmere also adapts to the warmer seasons: for milder days, we use 2-ply wool or blends with up to 55% silk. This is how our ultra-light sweaters are created, featuring straight or oversized designs, crew, V-neck, or boat necks—key pieces for a cool and elegant summer wardrobe.
