How to care for and wash your cashmere garments

Cashmere is a natural fibre that is known for being soft, luxurious and warm, but it also requires special care. Its care is essential for the life of the garment, so I will give you some tips on how to wash and care for your cashmere garments so that they stay in perfect condition for a long time.

What is cashmere?

First, let's talk a little about what exactly cashmere is. It is a fiber obtained from the fur of goats from the Kashmir region of Asia. Due to its natural origin, it is very soft and insulating, making it a perfect material for sweaters, scarves, gloves and other winter clothing.

How to wash cashmere?

The first golden rule for cashmere care is to always read the care labels on your cashmere garments. Each label explains how to wash your garments.

Here are some general tips that will be useful to you:

Hand washing: In general, it is preferable to wash your cashmere garments by hand rather than using the washing machine. Fill a large bowl with cold water and add a mild, wool or cashmere-specific detergent (PH neutral). Gently mix the water and detergent, immerse the garment and gently move it to clean it. Do not rub or twist the garment, as this can damage the fibres. Afterwards, rinse it with cold water until the detergent has been completely removed.

Machine Washing: It is important to know what model you have at home. A washing machine from many years ago is not the same as a new model. Nowadays, washing machines come with a specific wool programme and our clients use it. It is important to put the machine in a washing bag for delicate garments, only wash cashmere garments, use cold water and do not spin dry.

Drying: Never wring out a cashmere garment to remove excess water, as this can cause it to become misshapen. Instead, place the garment between two clean towels and gently press to absorb moisture. Then, spread the garment out on a dry, flat towel to air dry. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight or excessive heat, as heat can shrink the fibers.

Dry cleaning: It is not necessary to take your garments to a dry cleaner, but for added peace of mind, choose a reputable dry cleaner who has experience handling cashmere garments.

How to care for your cashmere garments?

Storage: Store your cashmere garments in a cool, dry place. It is advisable to store them in cotton or linen bags to protect them from dust and moisture. If you are storing them for a long period of time, make sure they are clean and completely dry to prevent mold from forming. It is best to have your garments folded but if you want to hang them, use padded hangers to prevent them from becoming misshapen.

Anti-pilling : Cashmere garments are prone to pilling at first due to continuous use or rubbing. You can use a lint remover or a brush to gently remove the pilling . It is also important to try not to wear your cashmere garments with bags or belts that can rub and create this pilling, which can cause pilling. The pilling tends to disappear over time, so keep removing the pilling, wash the garment and it will last a long time.

Mothproof: Moths don't discriminate. They love cashmere just as much as we do. The reason is that these pesky creatures are attracted to the natural proteins found in wool fibers, including cashmere. You should also know that moths thrive in warm, humid environments so storage is very important as we have already told you.

But don't worry, here are some tips to keep your clothes safe. The best way to prevent a moth infestation in your cashmere garments is to keep them clean. So, make sure to wash or clean your clothes before storing them. Moths hate the smell of cedar and lavender. Place cedar or lavender sachets in your closets or drawers to deter them.

We know moths can be a real nuisance, but with regular care and attention, you can keep your precious garments safe from these little intruders.

In short, taking care of your cashmere garments is essential to ensure they last a long time and stay soft and loving. By following these care and washing tips, you can enjoy the softness and luxury of cashmere for many seasons to come. So, take care of them and enjoy the comfort and style these garments can offer!
